Haunted House

BREAKING NEWS:

The good witches gathered today at the Rathskeller to conjure up some happy spells to protect and care for all dogs and cats at this year’s Haunted Hair Ball.  Three ingredients, a red rose, a pink candle and water, were being placed in a blessings bowl when tragedy struck.  The lights started to flash, the floor rumbled and the room filled with smoke.  The witches were in a tizzy and went for their wands and brooms.  When the smoke cleared and the lights and floor settled, their happy spells were gone!  Who took them?  The witches were confounded.  Then the oldest witch spoke. “It must be the evil mean Mad Max Magician.  He is up to his old tricks.  Now we need to find him and retrieve our happy spells.”  They all agreed.  But where to look?  They needed help from their wise friend Sara Risley of Get Lost Indiana.  She would have some good ideas.  So off they flew to find Sara.

Will Sara be able to help?  Will they be too late?

Follow the witches as they frantically search for Mad Max in time to save the Haunted Hair Ball, Saturday October 26th at the Rathskeller Downtown Indianapolis. Magic tickets on sale now.

BREAKING NEWS:

The witches have been spotted by local miniaturists at the Museum of Miniature Houses in Carmel. It seems they have reduced their size to miniature and were flying around on their brooms almost like dragonflies. They seemed intent on finding someone.

Meanwhile, in the hobby display gallery, Sara Risley of Get Lost Indiana was studying the miniature hobbies on display. All of a sudden something buzzed her ear. The witches were trying to get her attention. They parked their brooms and sat down at the miniature Monopoly table Sara was observing and began to play the game. Sara was startled. She bent closer to the display to see if she was seeing things. The witches now had Sara’s attention and called out for her to join them outside. On their brooms again they lead Sara outside where they returned to their normal size. “Sara, we need your help!

The Magician Mad Max has stolen all our good spells we need for the Haunted Hair Ball on October 26th. Those spells will help us raise funds to support all the great work of SNSI. Can you help us save the Hair Ball?” The witches wanted her to use her eyes and ears to help find Mad Max as Sara travels all over Indiana. Sara was excited to help. She would send word to them as to what she heard or saw.

The witches were thrilled and continued on their way to find Max. Although it was reported a few of them flew back into the museum to finish that game of Monopoly.

BREAKING NEWS:

The witches are at a farm orchard in Sheridan searching through a Halloween pumpkin patch looking for clues on Mad Max, the magician who stole their good spells. They received a message from their friend Sara. Mad Max was spotted at the Train Car Hotel at Union Station in downtown Indianapolis. Sara was having lunch with a friend downtown when she overhead a waiter at the next table report that a crazy magician was causing a raucous at the Train Station Hotel. The witches jumped on their brooms and headed south. Just over the Hamilton/Marion county border their brooms went into tailspins and nose dives. They were in some strange vortex. The winds were spinning around them and they were getting dizzy. But as quick as it started, they were out of it and landed in a heap in the parking lot of the Indianapolis Art Center. The oldest witch was convinced that Mad Max had conjured up the vortex. They jumped back on their brooms, but went nowhere. Seems their brooms had lost their zoom and needed recharged. They had to get downtown immediately! One of the witches suggested they head down the street and hop on the Red Line bus. She heard they had charging stations on the bus. So off they ran. When the bus reached the Statehouse, they got off and raced toward the Train Station Hotel. Upon arriving they found the hotel manager. He was standing outside one of the Pullman cars waving a book over his head and yelling. “This is all that sneaky theft left us. He disappeared without paying his bill!” He showed the book to the witches. They knew exactly where Mad Max was headed. Now to get there as fast as they could. But their brooms were still reprograming. What to do? Out side was a bright Yellow cab. The driver was astonished to see so many witches pile into his cab with all their brooms. But when he looked into rearview mirror, all he saw was one sweet very old lady. “Where to dear lady?” he asked scratching his head. And off they went to the “Indiana Crazy House.”

BREAKING NEWS:

A visitor outside the Medical History Museum was standing there with his mouth a gape. He was amazed to see all the witches and their brooms get out of a Yellow cab. The witches rushed into the museum. They showed their membership passes and started to scour the area for Mad Max. The museum is located on the grounds of the former Central State Hospital, originally known as the “Indiana Hospital for the Insane” and opened in 1848. While standing in the Old Pathology Building, the oldest pathology facility in the country, they referred to the book the hotel manger at the Train Station Hotel had given them. The book, “Indiana Crazy House” by Albert Thayer, had photographs of the patients who were once housed there. Mad Max appeared in two of these photos. Is this where he hid their good spells? A frantic search began. They investigated the laboratories, the library, reception area and the records room as well as the autopsy room. But to no avail as they found neither Mad Max nor their spells. But they knew he had just been there as they found a theatrical mask tossed hastily into a corner of the autopsy room. They were hot on his trail. Their brooms ready they left the museum and flew around Monument Circle to a favorite haunt of Mad Max in the early 1900s. What would they find there?

BREAKING NEWS:

The witches flew to the back of the Hilbert Circle Theatre to search for Mad Max, the Magician who stole their good spells, and hastily entered the theatre through the stage entrance.  The back of the theatre was dark and gloomy and they almost ran smack into a ghost horse and a ghost movie goer looking for refreshments.  The theatre was built on the site of a livery stable which operated until the early 1900’s when some prominent businessmen bought the site and erected the theatre.  The theatre in its early years featured live acts and films.  An old poster on the wall in the hallway showed Magician Mad Max performing one of his disappearing acts in 1928.  Seems he was still good at disappearing.  The witches heard music, but discovered it was only the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra practicing for an upcoming concert.  The orchestra conductor pointed to the back of the stage and told the witches that Mad Max had gone that way towards their famous Wurlitzer organ.  The witches surrounded the organ but Mad Max had vanished.  Now where had he gone?  He must have come to the theatre looking for something.  What was it?  As they turned to leave one of the witches saw something shimmering and stuck between the organ’s pipes.  It was part of an old movie poster of a James Dean Movie, “Rebel Without a Cause”.  On the back of the poster were directions to Dean’s hometown, but part of the directions were missing.  Could Mad Max be heading there?  What could he possibly want from James Dean?  Only one way to find out.  Fly there.  Off the witches went to Fairmount, Indiana in search of James Dean and Max.

BREAKING NEWS:

The witches arrived in Fairmont Indiana before the rush hour began.  Witches hate being out during rush hour when all the witches, good and bad, are racing home or to a favorite haunt.  The witches flew to the Park Cemetery to find James Dean.  He was sitting on top of his gravestone chewing on a toothpick and petting his dog Max, named after Mad Max.  His gravesite was located next to a gravel road at the top of a small hill, and his tombstone was covered in lipstick kisses. He looked the part of a Hollywood heartthrob and was quite charming.   He was surprised to see the witches as he was waiting for Mad Max, the magician who had stolen the witches’ good spells.   James had heard from Max who wanted a ride in the Porsche that James loved to race, which prompted the local police loved to stop and ticket him for speeding.  James Dean loved racing and was a talented winning driver having won several races before he filmed “Giant.”  But the movie studio made him quit for safety reasons.  He was so disappointed because he wanted to race in the Indianapolis 500.  James told the witches that Max needed a ride to some Fire Tower somewhere.  “Do you know why?” inquired one of the witches.  “He said he had something to hide there, but didn’t say what.”  The witches thanked him for his help and after getting his autograph, flew to a grove of nearby trees to wait for Mad Max.  Little did they know that Max had spotted them and had hitched a ride with a trucker who was going near the Fire Tower.  When sunset came and went, the witches knew they had missed him.  They decided to fly home and call Sara Risley of Get Lost Indiana for information about the Fire Tower.   She would know its story.

BREAKING NEWS:

The witches were disappointed in not capturing Mad Max the magician who stole their good spells, and were headed home for the night. The next morning after doing a few witch house chores, they flew out to search for Sara and for something good to eat. They rushed to one of their favorite haunts, the Waffle Whitch in Martinsburg IN. It was easy to find on Main Street, and they felt at home there. The staff was witch friendly even dressing like witches. The place was decorated in all kinds of witch paraphernalia, and served delicious food made with a fun “whitchy” twist. When they arrived, they were surprised to find their friend Sara Risley of GetLostIndiana. Sara was happily breakfasting on a waffle bowl stuffed with eggs and covered in gravy and yummy cheese. The witches were excited to see her and quickly questioned her about the fire tower. Sara told them that the fire tower was located near Shoals Indiana. It was built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and included picnic areas, shelter houses, a camp site, and fishing ponds. All on 7,863 acres of lush, healthy, growing forest. They would recognize the park by its two sandstone markers at the entrance. After finishing their own brunch, off they flew to Shoals Indiana. Arriving at the park they quickly found the fire tower. Even after many forest fires, the fire tower stood strong as it was constructed of steel. Mad Max was not there. A nearby forest ranger sent them over a stone bridge to a trailside shelter where he saw Mad Max heading earlier that morning. They arrived at the shelter. The shelter was quite rustic with its walls, floor, foundation and fireplace built of stone. Suddenly a flash of light appeared at the back of the shelter. The witches ran outside in time to see Mad Max disappear in a whirlwind on top of one of the fishing ponds. By the time they got there, he was gone. They returned to the shelter. Where was he going? In the fireplace they had found a half-burnt postcard from Amish Acres Historic Farm. One of the witches remembered he had an uncle who lived there. Off they raced to Nappanee Indiana to find that farm.

Will they catch Mad Max there?
